The play “इस शहर जिसे कहते हैं – दिल्ली में एक दरवेश रहता था (मिर्ज़ा ग़ालिब)” presents a dramatic portrayal of the life, thoughts, and world of the legendary poet Mirza Ghalib. Set in the vibrant lanes of nineteenth-century Delhi—especially Ballimaran and Chandni Chowk—the play recreates the cultural atmosphere of the city and the everyday life that shaped Ghalib’s poetry and philosophy.
Through a narrative style that blends storytelling, dialogue, and poetry, the play depicts Ghalib as a sensitive thinker and a free-spirited “darvesh.” His relationship with Umrao Begum, his interactions with friends and neighbours, and his struggles with financial hardship and political uncertainty reveal the human side of the poet. At the same time, the play celebrates the shared culture of old Delhi, where people from different backgrounds lived together and participated in the city’s vibrant social life.
